Auvergne produces a few good but not so strong wines, which although taste splendid, aren’t very popular. The best thing though, about the region, are the many variety of cheeses that are produces here, making Auvergne a real competition for Savoie, which produces some of the best cheese in the world.

Info: One of the best-known restaurants in Clermont-Ferrand occupies a modern dining room in a late-19th-century town house in the center of Clermont’s oldest neighborhood. It features ultra contemporary decor, large-scale oil paintings, and an emphasis on creative cuisine that’s carefully tuned to the seasons.

Le Trois Paves
Info: In the heart of town, this lovely restaurant occupies a pair of old-fashioned dining rooms in a house whose interior is much older than its 19th-century facade. The kitchen is devoted to the traditions of the region, preparing dishes that utilize the Auvergne’s robust wines, as well as lentils, which crop up in appealing and flavorful ways.

L’Alambic
Info: This small restaurant has only 18 seats, and because L’Alambic has some of the best food in Vichy, they fill up quickly. Within a pale green, warmly appointed dining room, which locals say is ideal for intimate dialogs, you can order from an array of ever-changing dishes.

Info: If you’re in the mood to meet the locals, head for the town’s most animated bar. Here, within a mostly blue-toned setting punctuated with a long bar and a karaoke setup, you can babble and jive with a clientèle aged 23 to 50, some of whom may even actually remember something about the long-ago Vichy government of World War II.
